ABOUT AWQAF AFRICA

Building sustainable systems through waqf, Islamic social finance, knowledge, institutional development and strategic partnerships across Africa.

Our Story

Awqaf Africa began in 2022 from a conviction that waqf can do more than respond to immediate needs: it can help build enduring institutions, opportunities and systems for Africa.

The initiative grew from inspiration connected to participation in the Global Waqf Conference in Malaysia and from a desire to mobilise waqf for sustainable development, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and community transformation.

From an Idea to a Pan-African Mandate

What started with a strong focus on African youth has developed into a wider institutional mandate: strengthening waqf and Islamic social finance governance, building human capability, advancing research and knowledge, enabling responsible technology and innovation, supporting sustainable enterprise, and connecting African institutions with global partners.

Our continental ambition is matched by country-level implementation, institutional partnerships and practical programmes.

Our Institutional Focus

Waqf & Islamic Social Finance — strengthening sustainable social-finance models and productive waqf.

Governance & Institutional Development — supporting accountable, transparent and future-ready institutions.

Education & Human Capital — developing knowledge, leadership, professional capability and pathways for African talent.

Research & Knowledge — generating and exchanging evidence, frameworks and practical intelligence.

Technology & Innovation — advancing responsible digital infrastructure and WaqfTech applications.

Economy, Enterprise & Sustainable Development — connecting social finance with productive investment, entrepreneurship and resilient communities.

Humanitarian & Community Development — addressing immediate needs while designing pathways toward longer-term resilience.

Our Approach

We seek to move from short-term interventions toward durable systems: knowledge → governance → institutional capability → investment and implementation → measurable impact.

Our Commitment

Awqaf Africa is committed to responsible stewardship, institutional credibility, partnership, learning and sustainable impact. Youth empowerment remains central to our work, while our mandate now extends across the systems and institutions that shape Africa’s long-term development.
