Introduction

In today’s interconnected world, the role of Awqaf institutions in fostering global moderation is crucial. The 9th Conference of Ministers of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, held in Makkah, brought together leaders from over 60 countries to discuss strategies for reinforcing the principles of moderation in Islam. This article delves into the significant contributions of Awqaf institutions in combating extremism, promoting peace, and upholding the essence of Islam, drawing on teachings from the Shafi’i school of thought, Hadith, and Quranic verses.

The Importance of Promoting Moderation

Moderation, or Wasatiyyah, is central to Islamic teachings. The Quran emphasizes this balanced approach to life:

“And thus we have made you a just (or moderate) community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you…” (Quran 2:143).

This verse underscores the responsibility of Muslims to embody and promote moderation. Awqaf institutions are pivotal in demonstrating Islam as a religion of peace and balance.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stressed the importance of moderation with the following Hadith:
“Beware of going to extremes in religion, for those who came before you were destroyed by going to extremes in religion.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i, 3057).

This Hadith highlights the dangers of extremism and the need for a balanced approach, a core message that Awqaf institutions are tasked with promoting globally.

Building Bridges: International Collaboration through Awqaf

The Shafi’i school of thought, known for its emphasis on reasoned discourse and balanced judgment, aligns closely with the principles of moderation. Imam al-Shafi’i said:
“My opinion is correct with the possibility of being wrong, and the opinion of others is wrong with the possibility of being correct.”

This quote reflects the Shafi’i emphasis on humility and respect for differing opinions—values crucial for fostering international collaboration. By building bridges between Islamic ministries worldwide, Awqaf institutions can share best practices and develop unified strategies to tackle common challenges.

Combating Terrorism and Extremism

Awqaf institutions play a vital role in combating terrorism and extremism by promoting education and a correct understanding of Islam. The Quran condemns terrorism and violence, stating:
“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” (Quran 5:32).

This verse emphasizes the sanctity of life and the importance of peace, values that Awqaf institutions strive to uphold. Through educational initiatives and community outreach, these organizations work to prevent the spread of extremist ideologies.

Imam al-Shafi’i also highlighted the importance of education:
“Seek knowledge for it is the adornment of the mind, the light of the heart, and the gateway to wisdom.”

By promoting education, Awqaf institutions empower individuals with the knowledge needed to reject extremism and embrace the true teachings of Islam.

The Role of Awqaf in Upholding Islamic Values

Awqaf organizations are crucial in maintaining the spiritual and moral guidance of the Muslim community. The Shafi’i school emphasizes adherence to the Sunnah and preserving the integrity of religious practices. Imam al-Shafi’i said:

“Whoever learns the Qur’an, his worth increases. Whoever speaks about religious knowledge, his value is magnified. And whoever writes Hadith, his proof is strengthened.”

This focus on religious education and practice aligns with the role of Awqaf in upholding Islamic values and ensuring that imams and preachers are well-prepared to guide their communities.

Conclusion

The 9th Conference of Ministers of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf highlighted the essential role of Awqaf institutions in promoting global moderation, combating extremism, and fostering international collaboration. Rooted in the teachings of the Quran, Hadith, and the Shafi’i school of thought, these institutions are pivotal in shaping the future of the global Islamic community. By continuing to uphold Islamic principles and working together, Awqaf organizations ensure that the true message of peace and moderation is conveyed to the world.
