🌅 Introduction: A Revival Rooted in Mercy

On 15 November 2025, Awqaf Africa launched its inaugural Health Waqf Monthly Talk Series, titled “Waqf Dialysis: Reviving Mercy Through Sustainable Healthcare.”
The session brought together medical professionals, Islamic finance scholars, policy leaders, and community builders, all united by a shared vision:

“To restore Waqf as a pillar of modern healthcare and a lifeline for vulnerable patients.”

Moreover, this initiative is deeply grounded in Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly Hifz al-Nafs (preservation of life), and it is also fully aligned with UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
Consequently, the series aims to reconnect modern healthcare with its Islamic roots while addressing today’s urgent medical challenges.

🌿 The Qur’anic Foundation: Healing as Mercy

Islamic teachings consistently emphasize the sanctity of life and the value of healthcare as an expression of mercy.
Notably, the Qur’an reminds us:

﴿ وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا ﴾
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:32)
“Whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity.”

This profound verse therefore forms the foundation of Waqf healthcare—removing financial barriers and ensuring access for those who need treatment the most.

🌙 Prophetic Foundations: Compassion & Service

The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ further strengthens the call for mercy-driven healthcare.
In addition, the following narrations highlight the spiritual depth of serving others:

📜 Hadith 1

قال رسول الله ﷺ:
«لَا يَزَالُ اللهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ، مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ»
(رواه مسلم)
“Allah continues to help His servant as long as the servant helps his brother.”

📜 Hadith 2

قال رسول الله ﷺ:
«إِذَا مَاتَ الإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ…»
(رواه مسلم)
“…except for three: continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”

🏥 Success Story: RS Syariah Bogor — A Model for the Muslim World

A major highlight of the session was the inspiring case study of RS Syariah Bogor in Indonesia—one of the world’s leading Waqf-based hospitals.
Indeed, it demonstrates how Waqf can function successfully in a modern medical setting.

💔 The Challenge: The Dialysis Burden

Chronic kidney disease creates immense pressure on patients and families.
Many face:

  • High, recurring treatment costs
  • Lifelong, unavoidable dependency
  • Emotional, spiritual, and financial exhaustion

However, Waqf offers a sustainable, long-term solution—not just temporary relief.
Consequently, it provides hope for patients who struggle with continuous financial strain.

🌙 Spiritual Significance of Waqf in Healthcare

A Waqf dialysis centre becomes a form of ṣadaqah jāriyah, providing:

  • Continuous treatment for hundreds annually
  • Ongoing spiritual reward for donors
  • Sustainable mercy long after one’s lifetime

Ultimately, this transforms healthcare into a legacy of compassion and enduring benefit.

🌍 Call to Action: Reviving a Forgotten Legacy

“Waqf built hospitals during the Golden Age of Islam. Waqf can rebuild hospitals today.”

Awqaf Africa announced the following initiatives:

  • Waqf Dialysis Centres
  • Waqf Clinics

Collectively, these efforts mark the beginning of a global revival of Islamic, mercy-driven healthcare.
Likewise, they signal a renewed commitment to building sustainable medical solutions for future generations.

✨ Conclusion: The Beginning of a Global Revival
